Nest Protect

Alright, it's confession/self-shaming time on the blog today...

For the past two years, we have had ZERO smoke detectors in our home. None!  I know, I know. Worst home-owners of the year award - right here.

Well, before you freak out on us too much, let me explain. It's not entirely our fault! (At least that's what we keep telling ourselves.) Our house was built in 1939. From the looks of it, the home has never had a single smoke detector installed. We didn't even realize we had none until a good 6-9 months of living in the house! How in the world we passed a home inspection without smoke detectors is still beyond me, but I digress.

Either way, I know we should have run to the hardware store immediately after realizing this heinous crime, but we didn't. Why? Welllllll........ I could come up with a million excuses, but it truly comes down to one simple answer. I wanted a COOL smoke detector! Ha. Yeah, that's right. You may be asking yourself.... "what the heck is a 'cool' smoke detector"? WELL. If you've been following the blog for a little while now, you may remember a post where I talked about our Nest Learning Thermostat. "Nelly", as we call her, is amazing and I would recommend her to anyone. Well low and behold, Nest actually sells smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, too! SO. COOL. Well, except for the whole $100 price tag. Not outrageous, but I'm a cheapskate. Your everyday smoke detector usually runs about $25, so paying 4x was just a bit hard to swallow.

It's sleek, and I actually feel quite relieved to know that we're finally up to code! I, of course, had to give her a name as well, so we settled on "Petunia". Protecting Petunia.
