Simple Maternity Wardrobe

I took the term ‘capsule wardrobe’ to a whole new level during this pregnancy. It wasn’t entirely intentional, I just have a hard time justifying purchases for such a short period of time. I ended up buying very (very!) few items and doing a whole lot of mixing and matching to keep things interesting. I did much of the same during my last pregnancy, but I’ll admit being in a corporate office environment (albeit one where with a relaxed dress code - we could wear jeans) and having a baby in July meant a slightly different set of needs.

I wore maternity jeans or shorts and a tee with a jacket just about every day when I was pregnant with Marin. It was the most comfortable attire at the time, and it was easy to dress up or down. This time? Baby girl HATES pants. Like with a burning passion. I’ve been mandated to dresses since May, like it or not. Funny enough, I actually owned ZERO dresses before I found out I was pregnant. I’ve since bought a few (seven to be exact), and they have been my saving grace. I’ve been wearing them day in and day out for the past five+ months, and I thought it was worth throwing together a post to share my experience.

With all of that said, this probably isn’t your typical post to say “hey, go buy these pretty things!”. Instead, I’m simply sharing that it is 100% possible to live with less. WAY LESS. You may also notice that not a single thing I purchased was “maternity” clothing. You can be pregnant and still buy normal clothes! And if you want to buy maternity clothes? Go for it! You do you. Seriously. Figure out what makes you feel your best and go for it.

  • Lightspun Colette Mini Dress - This was the last dress of the seven that I bought, and I did so because I wanted something that was still cool yet would transition well into fall/winter. Everything else I had was either short sleeved or sleeveless, so this was a great addition. It can easily be worn once baby is here, too.

  • Doen Thoreau Dress - The very first dress I purchased and well worth every penny. It’s beautiful, versatile, from a great brand, and works well for a variety of seasons.

  • Gingham Midi Dress - A super inexpensive purchase, but this dress has exceeded my expectations. It’s probably my second most-worn/washed piece and still looks great. I ended up hand-stitching the top of the dress closed to ensure it didn’t pull as my bust expanded during pregnancy, but otherwise my normal size XS has been a perfect fit.

  • Weekend Tee Dress - Surprisingly bump-friendly. I like the ease of t-shirt dresses, espeically for days at home. This is easy to throw on and not think twice. I got an XS and it fits the bump nicely. I like to roll the sleeves for a casual look.

  • Linen Mini Dress - This dress was perfect during those first few months of pregnancy where you’re feeling bloated but not entirely looking pregnancy. It saw a ton of wear then and I still wear it at almost nine months pregnant.

  • Gingham Button Dress - Hands down, my most worn piece this pregnancy. I think everyone is tired of seeing me in this, but it’s the most comfortable dress I own, always looks great, layers well, washes well, and I just like it! It came with a lining, but I cut that out after the first wear and haven’t missed it one bit.

  • T-Shirt Dress - This is such a flattering t-shirt dress. It has an awesome cut and can be easily dressed up or down. I wore it all the time during the middle of my pregnancy and it was perfect on those really hot days, but I’ll admit it’s a little small these days. I’m looking forward to wearing it again postpartum.
